Colorado Mountain Passes

Coal Bank Pass - Hwy. 550, about 25 north of Durango, CO. At about 10,200 feet, one cannot help but be impressed with the views and surrounding country side. Talk about being remote. Even the outdoor toilets are named. I guess it makes sense since they are often the only building within miles.

Molas Pass - Hwy.550, about 35 miles north of Durango, CO. Molas Pass is quite different in many ways from other mountain passes. The elevation is about 10,000 feet, which is not uncommon, but there are two mountain lakes within viewing distance of the pull off. There is also a trail which passes below the lake on the east side of Hwy.550, which is a hikers dream. I have never hiked the entire trail, but have been told it goes all the way to Denver. My sources also advise to the best idea is to plan on the trip lasting several weeks. Wow!
